Study Note

'The world cannot hate you; but me it hateth, because I testify of it, that the works thereof are evil' — Jesus's words to his unbelieving brothers explain the structural reason for the world's hostility toward him and, by extension, toward all who bear his witness. The world's indifference to those who conform to its values, and its hostility toward those who name its evil, anticipates John 15:18–19's 'if the world hate you, ye know it hated me first.' The sociology of prophetic testimony embedded in the verse has been formative for Christian martyrology and the theology of the church as an inherently countercultural community in any age.
