Study Note

Jesus's response to his disciples' astonished question — 'who then can be saved?' — declares that 'with man this is impossible, but not with God; all things are possible with God.' The context is the rich young ruler's departure (verses 17-22) and Jesus's teaching that wealth makes entrance into God's kingdom as unlikely as a camel through a needle's eye. The verse does not teach that salvation is impossible for the wealthy specifically, but that no human effort, advantage, or resource can secure it — only divine action can. This affirmation of divine omnipotence in the context of salvation has shaped Reformed and Augustinian soteriology's emphasis on prevenient grace.
