The introduction of the Son of Man's judgment scene — 'When the Son of Man comes in his glory, and all the angels with him, he will sit on his glorious throne' — is the most elaborate parousia scene in the Synoptic Gospels and draws on Daniel 7:14 for its imagery. The universal scope ('before him will be gathered all the nations') and the criterion of judgment (treatment of 'the least of these my brothers and sisters') together constitute one of the most socially significant passages in the New Testament. Whether 'the least of these' refers narrowly to persecuted disciples or broadly to the poor is a matter of ongoing exegetical debate with significant ethical implications. The scene's depiction of Christ as judge of all nations grounds the universal dimension of Christian eschatology and social ethics simultaneously.
