Study Note
Micah's final doxology closes by appealing to the Abrahamic and Jacobine covenants: 'You will be faithful to Jacob, and show love to Abraham, as you pledged on oath to our ancestors in days long ago.' The appeal to ancestral promises as the ground of present hope is characteristic of prophetic eschatology (compare Isaiah 41:8-10; Psalm 105) and situates the anticipated restoration within the longest arc of redemptive history. Luke 1:54-55 quotes this verse in the Magnificat — Mary's praise for the Incarnation — presenting the birth of Jesus as the fulfillment of Micah's petition. The verse models prayer that roots petition in the character and promises of God rather than in present circumstances.
