Etam

Tribe of Simeon then Judah · H5862H
Old Testament

Etam, a village associated with the tribe of Simeon and the home of a Judahite clan.

Etam was a town in the territory of Judah near Ain, first mentioned in 1 Chronicles 4:3 in connection with the descendants of Hur son of Caleb. The name appears in the genealogical record as a place associated with Judah's early clan settlements, and the same location appears in Judges 15:8 as the rock of Etam where Samson took refuge after striking the Philistines. Its mention in the Judahite genealogy reflects the ancient practice of naming clans after the towns they founded or inhabited.
