Study Note
Paul's willingness to be 'offered upon the sacrifice and service of your faith' uses the metaphor of libation poured over a sacrifice — his life as the liquid offering completing the Philippians' solid sacrifice of faith. The Greek 'spendō' (pour out as a libation) is the same word used in 2 Timothy 4:6 when Paul anticipates his martyrdom: 'I am now ready to be offered (spendoumai),' making the two passages bookends of his apostolic self-understanding. The remarkable inversion — Paul's apostolic death as supplementary to the congregation's sacrifice, not the reverse — challenges hierarchical models of ministry in which congregants serve the leader's vision. The joy expressed despite this mortal risk ('I joy, and rejoice with you all') exemplifies the christological pattern of Philippians 2:5-11 in lived form.
