Study Note

The exaltation of Christ — 'Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name' — is the divine response to the kenotic self-humbling described in 2:6-8. The 'therefore' (dio) makes the exaltation the consequence of the humiliation, structuring the hymn on the ancient wisdom principle that the way up is the way down (compare Luke 14:11; 18:14). The 'name that is above every name' — revealed in verse 10-11 as 'Jesus' confessed as 'Lord' (Kyrios, the LXX equivalent of YHWH) — applies to Jesus the divine name and the universal homage of Isaiah 45:23. The hymnic structure (verses 6-11) has been debated as pre-Pauline material, making it potentially one of the earliest expressions of high Christology in the entire New Testament.
