Study Note
Psalm 110 is the most frequently quoted Old Testament psalm in the New Testament, and verse 3 speaks of the voluntary readiness of the king's people 'in the day of your power' and of the king's priestly origin 'from the womb of the morning.' The phrase 'from the womb of the morning, like dew your youth will come' is difficult Hebrew (merekhem mishachar leka tal yalduteka) and has generated substantial textual and interpretive debate. Early Christian readers applied the entire psalm to Christ's exaltation at the right hand of the Father (Acts 2:34-35; Hebrews 7), making it central to Christological development. The verse's imagery of dew and morning suggests an inexhaustible, self-renewing power that reinforces the eternal kingship established in verse 4.
