Study Note
The social panorama of eschatological panic — kings, great men, rich men, chief captains, mighty men, every bondman, every free man — fleeing to caves and rocks represents a complete cross-section of the ancient world's social hierarchy united in terror before the divine wrath. The deliberate inclusion of 'every bondman' alongside kings and mighty men inverts normal social relations: in the face of divine judgment, the social distinctions that governed all earthly life become irrelevant. The imagery of hiding from God behind rocks and mountains echoes Hosea 10:8 ('say to the mountains, Cover us; and to the hills, Fall on us') and Luke 23:30, where Jesus quotes it in his lament over Jerusalem. The verse's democratic levelling of social hierarchy before divine judgment became foundational for both Christian apocalyptic preaching and social-justice uses of eschatological theology.
