The objective state of having transgressed God's law and the subjective feeling of moral failure. Romans 3:19 declares 'the whole world held accountable to God.' David's guilt after his sin with Bathsheba was crushing: 'My guilt has overwhelmed me like a burden too heavy to bear' (Psalm 38:4). Yet Psalm 32:5 records the release: 'I acknowledged my sin to you... and you forgave the guilt of my sin.' Romans 8:1 proclaims, 'There is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus.' Hebrews 10:22 invites believers to draw near 'with a sincere heart and with the full assurance that faith brings, having our hearts sprinkled to cleanse us from a guilty conscience.'
