Blood Covenant
A solemn, binding agreement sealed with blood, signifying life-and-death commitment. In the ancient Near East, covenant-making often involved cutting animals in half and passing between the pieces (Genesis 15:9-17). God alone passed between the pieces in his covenant with Abraham, binding himself unilaterally. The Mosaic covenant was ratified with blood: Moses 'took the blood, sprinkled it on the people and said, "This is the blood of the covenant"' (Exodus 24:8). Hebrews 9:22 declares, 'Without the shedding of blood there is no forgiveness.' Jesus' blood establishes the new covenant (Hebrews 9:14-15), making all previous blood covenants anticipatory shadows.
