Crucifixion

The execution of Jesus on a Roman cross outside Jerusalem, the central event of Christian faith. All four Gospels record it in detail (Matthew 27, Mark 15, Luke 23, John 19). Jesus was scourged, mocked, and forced to carry his cross to Golgotha. He was crucified between two criminals, fulfilling Isaiah 53:12. His seven last words from the cross include forgiveness (Luke 23:34), promise of paradise (Luke 23:43), care for his mother (John 19:26-27), and the cry of dereliction (Matthew 27:46). The veil of the temple was torn in two (Matthew 27:51). First Corinthians 1:18 declares the message of the cross 'the power of God.' Through the cross, God reconciled the world to himself (2 Corinthians 5:19).
