Greed
An insatiable desire for more, especially material wealth. Jesus warned, 'Watch out! Be on your guard against all kinds of greed; life does not consist in an abundance of possessions' (Luke 12:15). Colossians 3:5 equates greed with idolatry. The parable of the rich fool illustrates greed's folly (Luke 12:16-21). Achan's greed brought disaster on Israel (Joshua 7). Judas' greed led him to betray Jesus for thirty silver coins (Matthew 26:14-16). First Timothy 6:9-10 warns that those who want to get rich 'fall into temptation and a trap.' Hebrews 13:5 counsels, 'Keep your lives free from the love of money and be content with what you have.'
