Grief
Deep sorrow that accompanies loss, a natural and biblically affirmed human experience. David's grief over his son Absalom was devastating: 'O my son Absalom! My son, my son Absalom! If only I had died instead of you' (2 Samuel 18:33). The entire book of Lamentations is a sustained expression of grief over Jerusalem's destruction. Jesus was 'a man of suffering, and familiar with pain' (Isaiah 53:3). Paul instructed the Thessalonians not to 'grieve like the rest of mankind, who have no hope' — not to suppress grief but to grieve with resurrection hope (1 Thessalonians 4:13). God collects our tears in his bottle (Psalm 56:8).
