Idolatry
The worship of anything or anyone other than the true God. The second commandment forbids making graven images (Exodus 20:4-6). Israel repeatedly fell into idol worship — the golden calf (Exodus 32), Baal and Asherah poles (Judges 2:11-13), and high places (2 Kings 17:9-12). The prophets condemned idolatry with biting satire (Isaiah 44:9-20) and fierce warning (Jeremiah 10:1-16). In the New Testament, Paul identifies greed as idolatry (Colossians 3:5) and warns against 'the worship of created things rather than the Creator' (Romans 1:25). John's final exhortation: 'Dear children, keep yourselves from idols' (1 John 5:21).
