Naming
The act of giving a name, which in biblical culture conveyed identity, destiny, and authority. Adam named the animals (Genesis 2:19-20). God changed Abram to Abraham ('father of many,' Genesis 17:5), Jacob to Israel ('he struggles with God,' Genesis 32:28), and Simon to Peter ('rock,' Matthew 16:18). Prophets gave symbolic names to their children: Isaiah named his son Maher-Shalal-Hash-Baz (Isaiah 8:3), and Hosea named his children Lo-Ruhamah and Lo-Ammi (Hosea 1:6-9). The angel specified Jesus' name before his birth: 'You are to give him the name Jesus, because he will save his people from their sins' (Matthew 1:21). Revelation 2:17 promises believers a new name.
