Temple Worship
Worship centered on the Jerusalem temple, the dwelling place of God's name. Solomon's temple (c. 960 BC) replaced the tabernacle as Israel's worship center (1 Kings 6-8). After its destruction by Babylon (586 BC), the second temple was built under Zerubbabel (Ezra 3-6) and later expanded by Herod. Temple worship included daily sacrifices, incense, priestly blessing, music, and pilgrimage festivals. Jesus cleansed the temple (Matthew 21:12-13) and prophesied its destruction (Matthew 24:1-2). John 2:19-21 identifies Jesus' body as the true temple. Believers are now the temple of the Holy Spirit (1 Corinthians 3:16, 6:19).
