Tithing
The practice of giving a tenth of one's income or produce to God. Abraham tithed to Melchizedek (Genesis 14:20). The Mosaic law established multiple tithes supporting Levites, festivals, and the poor (Leviticus 27:30, Deuteronomy 14:22-29). Malachi 3:10 challenged Israel: 'Bring the whole tithe into the storehouse... Test me in this, and see if I will not throw open the floodgates of heaven.' Jesus affirmed tithing while emphasizing 'justice, mercy and faithfulness' (Matthew 23:23). While New Testament giving emphasizes cheerful generosity (2 Corinthians 9:6-7), many Christians view the tithe as a starting point for faithful stewardship.
