Works of the Law
Deeds performed in obedience to the Mosaic law, which Paul argues cannot justify a person before God. Galatians 2:16 states emphatically, 'A person is not justified by the works of the law, but by faith in Jesus Christ.' Romans 3:20 confirms, 'No one will be declared righteous in God's sight by the works of the law; rather, through the law we become conscious of our sin.' This does not mean the law is bad — Paul calls it 'holy, righteous and good' (Romans 7:12). Rather, the law's purpose was to reveal sin and point to Christ (Galatians 3:24). Genuine faith produces good works (Ephesians 2:10), but these are fruit, not the root of salvation.
