Study Note
'Neither as being lords over God's heritage, but being ensamples to the flock' — Peter's instruction to elders prohibits the katakurieuontes ('lording it over') pattern that Jesus himself condemned in Matthew 20:25–26, applying the anti-hierarchical ethic of Jesus's teaching directly to church leadership. The word 'heritage' (klēroi — lots, portions, flocks) may refer to specific congregations assigned as shepherding charges, or to the people of God as a whole as God's own inheritance. The leadership model — example rather than domination — has been foundational in Christian ecclesiology for the servant-leadership concept that distinguishes genuine pastoral authority from coercive institutional power.
