'Take heed therefore unto yourselves, and to all the flock, over the which the Holy Ghost hath made you overseers, to feed the church of God, which he hath purchased with his own blood.' The phrase 'his own blood' (dia tou haimatos tou idiou) is one of the New Testament's most direct attributions of the blood of the cross to God himself — a Christology of the highest order. The verse also grounds pastoral care in the atonement: the church is precious because of what it cost God, and overseers are stewards of this purchased community. 1 Peter 5:2-4 and John 10:11 develop the pastor-as-shepherd motif in parallel.
