Abraham's judicial challenge — 'far be it from you to do such a thing, to put the righteous to death with the wicked, so that the righteous fare as the wicked! Far be that from you! Shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just?' — is the most daring intercessory argument in the Old Testament. The question 'shall not the Judge of all the earth do what is just (mishpat)?' does not coerce God but holds God to God's own stated character, interceding from within the covenant relationship rather than outside it. The scene (18:22-33) has been fundamental to theological discussions of intercessory prayer, theodicy, and the relationship between divine sovereignty and human moral reasoning.
