Study Note

The opening of Hebrews presents Christ as the eschatological word — God has 'in these last days spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also he created the world.' The 'last days' frame identifies the entire new covenant era as the culmination of salvation history, consistent with Acts 2:17, 1 Peter 1:20, and 1 John 2:18. The twin statements — heir of all things and agent of creation — place the Son at both the origin and the destination of the cosmos, a Christological claim developed in Colossians 1:15-20. The seven descriptors of the Son in verses 2-3 (heir, creator, radiance of glory, exact imprint of nature, upholder of all, purifier of sin, seated at right hand) provide the most theologically dense introduction to a New Testament letter.
