Study Note

'For he shall have judgment without mercy, that hath shewed no mercy; and mercy rejoiceth against judgment.' The principle that the manner of one's relationships toward others determines the quality of divine judgment one receives echoes Matthew 5:7 ('blessed are the merciful: for they shall obtain mercy') and the Parable of the Unmerciful Servant (Matthew 18:23-35). The declaration 'mercy rejoiceth against judgment' (or 'triumphs over judgment') is not antinomianism but an expression of the divine character: mercy is God's ultimate orientation, and where it is practiced, it has a claim even against the judgment that hard-heartedness deserves.
