The Johannine connection between love and obedience — 'whoever has my commandments and keeps them, he it is who loves me' — grounds love not in feeling but in sustained disposition expressed in obedience. This bidirectional relationship (love expressed as obedience; obedience demonstrating love) reflects the Deuteronomic covenant theology in which love for God and keeping his commands are inseparable (Deuteronomy 6:5-6; 7:9). The promised reward — the Father loving the one who loves the Son, the Son manifesting himself to that person — makes increasing self-disclosure the experiential consequence of obedient love. 1 John 2:3-5 develops the same principle: 'by this we know we have come to know him, if we keep his commandments.'
