Study Note
'But he that doeth truth cometh to the light, that his deeds may be made manifest, that they are wrought in God' — the positive counterpart to verse 19's 'men loved darkness rather than light.' The phrase 'doeth truth' (poiōn tēn alētheian) is distinctively Hebraic (cf. 1 John 1:6 and the Hebrew 'ĕmet/'emunah idiom of covenantal faithfulness) and grounds moral action in ontological reality rather than mere rule-following. The disclosure-dynamic of the verse — truth-doers welcome exposure — is theologically significant: genuine spiritual life is inherently transparent and does not fear divine scrutiny, anticipating the Sermon on the Mount's 'blessed are the pure in heart, for they shall see God.'
