Study Note
On the last and greatest day of the Feast of Tabernacles — when water-pouring rituals were at their climax — Jesus's cry 'If anyone thirsts, let him come to me and drink' applies to himself the eschatological water-of-life imagery of Isaiah 55:1, Zechariah 14:8, and Ezekiel 47. The ambiguity of verse 38 — does 'his heart' refer to the believer or to Jesus? — has generated two major interpretive traditions, but both agree that the Spirit is the 'living water' promised (verse 39 identifies it explicitly). The liturgical context (Sukkot/Tabernacles) provides the dramatic setting: the ritual pointing to the Messianic age is here declared fulfilled in the person of Jesus. Revelation 22:17's invitation 'let the one who is thirsty come' mirrors this Johannine invitation in the final chapter of the canon.
