Old Testament

Ebed-melech, an Ethiopian eunuch in King Zedekiah's service, rescued the prophet Jeremiah from a cistern and was promised safety by God for his faith.

Ebed-melech ('servant of the king') was a Cushite eunuch in King Zedekiah's court in Jerusalem who showed extraordinary courage by interceding for the prophet Jeremiah after Jeremiah's enemies had thrown him into a muddy cistern to die (Jeremiah 38:7–13). Approaching the king at the Benjamin Gate, Ebed-melech persuaded Zedekiah to order Jeremiah's rescue, and he personally let down rags and worn-out clothes to cushion Jeremiah's ascent from the pit. God rewarded his faithfulness with a personal promise of deliverance at the fall of Jerusalem (Jeremiah 39:15–18), making him a notable example of righteous action amid the nation's collapse.
