Betrothal

12 ayet

The formal engagement period in ancient Israel, legally binding and requiring a certificate of divorce to dissolve. Mary and Joseph were betrothed when the angel announced Jesus' conception (Matthew 1:18-19). Betrothal involved payment of a bride price (mohar) by the groom's family (Genesis 34:12, Exodus 22:16-17). Deuteronomy 20:7 exempted betrothed men from military service. Hosea 2:19-20 uses betrothal language for God's relationship with Israel: 'I will betroth you to me forever; I will betroth you in righteousness and justice, in love and compassion.' The church is currently in a betrothal relationship with Christ, awaiting the wedding day (2 Corinthians 11:2).
