A persistent resentment that poisons the soul and relationships. Hebrews 12:15 warns, 'See to it that no one falls short of the grace of God and that no bitter root grows up to cause trouble and defile many.' Ephesians 4:31 commands, 'Get rid of all bitterness, rage and anger, brawling and slander, along with every form of malice.' Naomi's bitterness after losing her husband and sons led her to say, 'Call me Mara, because the Almighty has made my life very bitter' (Ruth 1:20). Acts 8:23 identified Simon the sorcerer as 'full of bitterness.' The antidote is forgiveness and trust in God's sovereign goodness (Ephesians 4:32).
