Liberation
The setting free of those who are oppressed or enslaved, a central theme of God's redemptive work. The Exodus is the foundational liberation story. Isaiah 61:1 prophesied, 'He has sent me to proclaim freedom for the captives and release from darkness for the prisoners.' Jesus inaugurated his ministry by reading this passage (Luke 4:18-19). Galatians 5:1 declares, 'It is for freedom that Christ has set us free.' Romans 8:2 affirms, 'Through Christ Jesus the law of the Spirit who gives life has set you free from the law of sin and death.' The Year of Jubilee (Leviticus 25) institutionalized liberation — freeing slaves and returning land. God is a God of liberation.
