Vanity
Excessive concern with appearance and self-importance, warned against throughout Scripture. Ecclesiastes uses 'vanity' (hebel) to describe the futility of life apart from God: 'Vanity of vanities, all is vanity' (Ecclesiastes 1:2, ESV). Proverbs 31:30 declares, 'Charm is deceptive, and beauty is fleeting; but a woman who fears the Lord is to be praised.' First Samuel 16:7 reveals God's perspective: 'The Lord does not look at the things people look at. People look at the outward appearance, but the Lord looks at the heart.' Isaiah 40:6-8 compares human glory to withering grass and fading flowers, contrasted with God's word that 'endures forever.' True significance comes from God, not self-promotion.
