Vine and Branches
Jesus' allegory in John 15:1-17 describing the vital connection between himself and his followers. 'I am the vine; you are the branches. If you remain in me and I in you, you will bear much fruit; apart from me you can do nothing' (John 15:5). The image draws on Old Testament imagery of Israel as God's vineyard (Isaiah 5:1-7, Psalm 80:8-16). Jesus redefines the vine as himself, making personal union with Christ the source of all spiritual fruitfulness. Branches that bear fruit are pruned to bear more; those that don't are cut off. The passage emphasizes abiding, obedience, love, and the joy that flows from this union.
