'And we know that the Son of God is come, and hath given us an understanding, that we may know him that is true, and we are in him that is true, even in his Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God, and eternal life.' The closing declaration 'This is the true God, and eternal life' — with 'this' most naturally referring to Jesus Christ just named — is one of the clearest explicit identifications of Jesus with 'the true God' in the New Testament. Trinitarians have consistently cited it alongside John 1:1 and Titus 2:13 as evidence for Christ's full deity. The verse also concludes 1 John's sustained epistemological argument: genuine knowledge of the true God is mediated exclusively through the Son.
