This is the true God, and eternal life.' The closing declaration 'This is the true God, and eternal life' — with 'this' most naturally referring to Jesus Christ just named — is one of the clearest explicit identifications of Jesus with 'the true God' in the New Testament. Trinitarians have consistently cited it alongside John 1:1 and Titus 2:13 as evidence for Christ's full deity. The verse also concludes 1 John's sustained epistemological argument: genuine knowledge of the true God is mediated exclusively through the Son.
