Study Note
The 'one like a son of man' presented before the 'Ancient of Days' in Daniel's night vision receives 'dominion and glory and a kingdom' that is everlasting and universal — 'all peoples, nations, and languages should serve him.' This figure is almost certainly a collective symbol for the 'saints of the Most High' in the context of Daniel 7, but Jesus's self-designation as 'Son of Man' more than eighty times in the Gospels identifies him as the individual who receives and embodies this authority. The high priest's question at Jesus's trial ('Are you the Messiah?') receives an answer that combines Psalm 110:1 and Daniel 7:13-14, indicating Jesus's conscious appropriation of the Danielic figure. Revelation 1:13 and 14:14 apply the same imagery to the risen Christ, making Daniel 7 a cornerstone of New Testament apocalyptic Christology.
