Study Note

The benediction — 'may the God of peace who brought again from the dead our Lord Jesus, the great shepherd of the sheep, by the blood of the eternal covenant, equip you with everything good that you may do his will, working in us that which is pleasing in his sight, through Jesus Christ' — is one of the most comprehensive benedictions in the New Testament. It grounds ethical equipping in the resurrection, the Davidic shepherd covenant (Ezekiel 34:23-24; Zechariah 13:7), and the eternal blood covenant, making moral transformation inseparable from atonement and resurrection. The phrase 'working in us what is pleasing to him' (poiōn en hēmin to euareston) presents God as the primary agent of the transformation for which the benediction prays, consistent with Philippians 2:13 ('it is God who works in you'). The trinitarian structure — God the equipper, the blood of the covenant (Christ's sacrifice), through Jesus Christ — again integrates the persons of the Trinity in a single benedictory act.
