Isaiah's opening oracle calls the people of Judah not to greater ritual observance but to moral transformation: 'Wash and make yourselves clean. Take your evil deeds out of my sight; stop doing wrong.' The sequence — cease evil, learn to do good, seek justice, rebuke the oppressor, defend the fatherless, plead for the widow — mirrors the covenant obligations of Deuteronomy and the ethical vision of the Psalms.
