Study Note
The messianic ruler of Isaiah 11 is girded with righteousness and faithfulness as his belt — a vivid image of these qualities as the very dress and deportment of his reign, not merely occasional attributes. The belt in antiquity was a functional garment that enabled readiness for action; to say righteousness is the messianic king's belt is to say he is perpetually equipped for justice and never caught unprepared. Ephesians 6:14's command to stand 'having your loins girt about with truth' applies this royal armour to every believer, democratising the messianic equipment as the armour of God. Isaiah 9:7's promise that the Davidic kingdom will be established 'in judgment and with justice' and Isaiah 16:5's just throne provide the wider literary context for this garment metaphor.
