Study Note
'Truly, truly, I say to you, whoever hears my word and believes him who sent me has eternal life. He does not come into judgment, but has passed from death to life' — the perfect tense 'has passed' (metabebēken, completed action with permanent result) places the eschatological transition from death to life in the present moment of faith. The 'double amen' (amēn amēn) formula is uniquely Johannine, appearing twenty-five times and marking Jesus's self-authoritative declarations distinct from the prophetic 'thus says the LORD.' The realized eschatology here — 'has passed from death to life' rather than 'will pass' — is balanced by the futurist resurrection of verse 28–29, creating the characteristic Johannine tension between already-realized and not-yet-consummated eschatology. The double requirement — 'hears my word and believes him who sent me' — holds together christological and theological faith, resisting the divorce of Jesus from the Father in either direction.
