Study Note

Gabriel's announcement that Jesus 'shall be great, and shall be called the Son of the Highest: and the Lord God shall give unto him the throne of his father David' is a direct echo of 2 Samuel 7:12-16's Davidic covenant, now applied to the child about to be conceived. The title 'Son of the Highest' (huios Hypsistou) is used in the LXX for Israel collectively (Psalm 82:6) and for the Davidic king (Psalm 2:7), suggesting the announcement fuses royal and filial categories. Luke's genealogy in 3:23-38 traces Jesus through David and Adam, and Acts 2:30-31 reads Psalm 132:11 as fulfilled in the resurrection, confirming that Davidic sonship for Luke is inseparable from the resurrection's vindication. Romans 1:3-4 provides the Pauline counterpart: Son of David according to the flesh, declared Son of God with power by the resurrection.
