Study Note
The two witnesses who prophesy for 1,260 days (42 months, or three and a half years) are clothed in sackcloth — the traditional garb of mourning and prophetic protest. The number 1,260 days links them to the period of Gentile trampling (verse 2) and the woman's wilderness sojourn (Revelation 12:6), and most scholars identify it as a symbol of the church's witness during tribulation rather than a literal calendar. The witnesses are identified in verse 4 with the two olive trees and lampstands of Zechariah 4:3-14, representing the Spirit-anointed testimony of prophetic and priestly offices. The entire scene draws on Moses (plagues, Exodus 7-11) and Elijah (fire, drought, 1 Kings 17-18) as typological figures of courageous witness before hostile powers.
