Study Note
Paul's benediction — 'May the God of hope fill you with all joy and peace in believing, so that by the power of the Holy Spirit you may abound in hope' — identifies God as 'the God of hope,' a title found nowhere in the Old Testament but implicit in the prophetic vision of Isaiah 55 and Jeremiah 31. The overflow structure — joy and peace in believing → abundance of hope by the Spirit's power — connects the trinitarian persons to the believer's experiential life: the Father as the source of hope, faith as the mode of reception, the Spirit as the agent of abundance. The verse concludes the major section on strong-weak relations (14:1-15:13) by redirecting the community from internal disputes to a shared forward orientation. The prayer form encapsulates Paul's practical theology: ethics requires more than instruction; it requires divine empowerment.
