Habitual avoidance of work and responsibility, consistently condemned in Scripture. Proverbs addresses the sluggard with sharp wit: 'Go to the ant, you sluggard; consider its ways and be wise!' (6:6). 'A little sleep, a little slumber, a little folding of the hands to rest — and poverty will come on you like a thief' (6:10-11). The parable of the talents condemns the servant who buried his talent as 'wicked and lazy' (Matthew 25:26). Paul commanded, 'Anyone who is unwilling to work should not eat' (2 Thessalonians 3:10). Laziness is not merely a personality trait but a failure of stewardship and love for others.
