The doctrine that all humanity inherits a sinful nature from Adam's first transgression in the Garden of Eden. Romans 5:12 states that 'sin entered the world through one man, and death through sin, and in this way death came to all people, because all sinned.' Psalm 51:5 expresses this condition: 'Surely I was sinful at birth, sinful from the time my mother conceived me.' The concept explains why every person is inclined toward sin apart from divine grace. Paul contrasts Adam's disobedience with Christ's obedience in Romans 5:18-19, showing how one man's righteousness brings justification and life for all who believe.
