Gift of Prophecy
A spiritual gift through which God communicates his message to the church for strengthening, encouragement, and comfort (1 Corinthians 14:3). Unlike Old Testament prophets who spoke with 'thus says the Lord' authority, New Testament prophecy is to be 'weighed carefully' (1 Corinthians 14:29) and tested against Scripture (1 Thessalonians 5:20-21). Paul ranked prophecy as the most desirable gift because it edifies the whole community (1 Corinthians 14:1-5). Agabus prophesied a famine (Acts 11:28) and Paul's arrest (Acts 21:10-11). Joel 2:28 foretold that in the last days, sons and daughters would prophesy.
