Propitiation
The turning away of God's wrath through a satisfactory sacrifice. Romans 3:25 presents Jesus as the 'propitiation' (hilasterion) whom God set forth in his blood. First John 4:10 declares that God 'sent his Son as the propitiation for our sins.' In the Old Testament, the mercy seat (kapporet) atop the Ark of the Covenant was the place where the high priest sprinkled sacrificial blood on the Day of Atonement (Leviticus 16:14-15). Propitiation differs from expiation in that it addresses God's righteous anger against sin, not merely the removal of guilt. Christ's death fully satisfies divine justice.
