Zephaniah's climactic salvation oracle describes YHWH as 'a warrior who saves,' rejoicing over his people with singing and quieting them with his love — one of the most intimate and joyful portrayals of the divine-human relationship in the entire Hebrew Bible. The phrase 'he will rejoice over you with singing' (yasis alayikh be-rina) applies to God the same Hebrew root used for the human joy of festivals and harvests, suggesting that divine delight in the redeemed mirrors human celebration at its most intense. The verse inverts the Day of the LORD motif that dominates the first two chapters of Zephaniah: the terrifying day of divine wrath becomes the day of divine joy for the humble remnant. New Testament parallels include the father running to embrace the returning son (Luke 15:20) and the wedding feast imagery of Revelation 19:7.
