Study Note

'For God, who commanded the light to shine out of darkness, hath shined in our hearts, to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ.' The parallel to Genesis 1:3's creation of light makes conversion a new creation — the same God who called light into being now illuminates the darkened human heart. The phrase 'face of Jesus Christ' (prosōpō Iēsou Christou) identifies the location of divine glory not in a theophany but in a human face, grounding Paul's theology of revelation in the Incarnation. John 1:4-5, 9 develops the same light-in-darkness metaphor for the coming of the Logos.
