Study Note

'And in the days of these kings shall the God of heaven set up a kingdom, which shall never be destroyed: and the kingdom shall not be left to other people, but it shall break in pieces and consume all these kingdoms, and it shall stand for ever.' Daniel's interpretation of Nebuchadnezzar's statue-dream culminates in the indestructible stone-kingdom that outlasts all human empires. Jesus's proclamation 'the kingdom of God is at hand' (Mark 1:15) and Revelation 11:15's 'the kingdoms of this world are become the kingdoms of our Lord' represent the New Testament's claim that this eternal kingdom has arrived in Christ. The verse has shaped Christian political theology's insistence that earthly powers are penultimate, not ultimate.
